This 19th century folk retablo represents La Piedad. "La Pieta" means "the pity" or "compassion" in Italian and Latin, referring to the depiction of the Virgin Mary sorrowfully cradling the dead body of Jesus on her lap after his crucifixion. It is a popular devotional image representing themes of suffering, mercy, and acceptance of God's will.
