18th century Spanish colonial hand carved and lacquered limosnero (alms tray for alms donations) surmounted by an 'anima sola', a lonesome soul awaiting judgement in the flames of purgatory. Verso with black bird and various foliate motifs. Natural pigments derived from cochineal, a small scale insect native to subtropical South America, Mexico and the Southwest United States that lives in stationary clumps on nopal, prickly pear cacti.. Circa 1750
