NS de la Salette Retablo
A 19th century Mexican folk retablo. Circa 1875.
Our Lady of La Salette refers to the apparition of the Virgin Mary to two children on a mountain in La Salette, France, on September 19, 1846. Maximin Giraud, age 11, and Mélanie Calvat, age 14, were tending their livestock when they encountered a luminous figure of a beautiful woman weeping, who revealed herself as the Virgin Mary. Our Lady of Salette was heartbroken over the people's sinful behavior, such as working on Sundays and blaspheming. She warned that if they did not convert, disaster would follow. She also shared secrets with the children about a future time of famine, war, and persecution. Her message also included a call for people to return to God through prayer and conversion. She stressed the importance of saying their prayers daily and attending Mass, even if they had neglected their faith.
Oil on tin. Circa 1875. Displayed in a hand painted period wood frame.
Dimensions: frame measures 19 inches x 15 inches. Retablo measures 14 inches x 10 inches.
