This rare 19th century Mexican folk retablo represents the Martyrdom of Saint Boniface, executed by armed pagan troops on a missionary expedition near the fortified Dutch city of Dokkum. Saint Boniface is celebrated as a great missionary, credited as one of the great European unifiers, and is also said to have been the inventor of the Christmas tree.
