This exceedingly fine and rare 19th century Mexican folk retablo represents San Camilo de Lelis, also known as the Red Cross Saint. It is attributed to one of Mexico's most revered retablo painters, 'Master of the San Camilo', and Illustrated in Saints and Sinners, Mexican Devotional Art, by James Caswell.
San Camilo, the patron saint of sick, hospitals, nurses and physicians, is almost always depicted as he is here, ministering to the sick at the hour of death with devils and angels competing for his departing soul.
