San Gonsalo de Amaranto Retablo
San Gonsalo de Amaranto, a very rare theme in retablo art, is almost always depicted as he is here, holding a pair of trout and a bridge model, which he built (nearly singlehandedly) over the river Tamega near Amarante, Portugal. Gonsalo is perhaps best known for his miracles. According to legend, San Gonsalos' workers became discouraged when wine ran short, so he struck a rock with his staff and good wine flowed freely. When food supplies came up short, Gonsalo went to the river banks and called the fish up to be caught. Storms ceased, droughts ended, and bread miraculously
appeared in abundance.
Displayed in a handsome hand painted period wood frame, a beautiful work of art in itself.
Dimensions: frame measures 19 inches vertical x 15 inches horizontal. Retablo measures 14 inches x 10 inches.
