This exceedingly fine and rare 19th century folk retablo represents Santiago Matamoro (St. James, Moor Slayer) in full armor with a defeated Moor in the foreground. Saint James is considered the patron saint of Spain, and his shrine at Santiago de Compostela in Galicia is a major pilgrimage site. He is also the patron saint of pilgrims, soldiers, veterinarians, pharmacists, and people with arthritis.
