This rare 19th century Mexican folk retablo represents 'La Sombra de San Pedro' (The Shadow of Saint Peter). San Pedro, the patron saint of long life, is flanked by another figure, his shadow, which healed the sick when it was cast upon them as he passed by. The barrel keys are a reference to his role as the doorkeeper to the gates of heaven.
Attributed to Agustin Barajas, the 'skimpy painter'. His unique style is unmistakable.
