Virgen de Ocotlan
This 19th century Mexican folk retablo represents 'Our Lady of Ocotlan'. According to legend, in the year of 1541, a young man named Juan Diego Bernardino was climbing through the forest onto a hill above the town of Tlaxcala where Mary called to him. He explained to her that the people of his town had been afflicted by a terrible plague. Mary asked Juan Diego Bernardino to follow her to a place where he could drink from a sacred river and be cured. After filling his container he returned to his village with water and everyone who drank the miraculous water was cured.
Illustrated in 'Pintura Mexicana en Lamina', page 118.
Displayed in a 19th century punched tin and reverse glass painted nicho frame, a beautiful work of art in itself.
Dimensions: retablo measures 14 inches x 10 inches. Nicho frame measures 20 inches x 16 inches.
