My journey into the realm of making art draws inspiration from my experiences as an art dealer specializing in tribal and cultural art from Spain, Mexico and the Americas. For over three decades, I found myself irresistibly drawn to the vibrant and captivating world of Mexican folk art.

Fueled by a desire to evolve beyond a conduit for others' stories, I went through some personal experiences I wanted to share both as a catharsis and also as a way to commemorate their happening. The very artifacts I once sold in my gallery now served as muses, inspiring me to write my own stories and incorporate them into a style all my own.

My transformation into an artist marked a full circle, where the lines between dealer and creator blurred. The influence of traditional Mexican folk art, once curated and presented in my gallery, became interwoven with my personal narratives.

My artistic journey draws inspiration from retablos, small oil paintings on tin depicting saints, and exvotos, devotional paintings expressing gratitude for miracles received. I often utilize a diverse range of narrative traditions including proverbs, ledger drawings, modern advertising, spoken clichés, comic books, salesman's samples, storyboards, street art, broadsides, and pop art. This eclectic blend serves as the palette through which I tell stories about events in my life, often casting myself as the protagonist to express gratitude for overcoming adversity.

I am not interested in co-opting anyone else’s stories, rather my method utilizes archaic and time-tested narrative forms which I also pay homage to. Just as novelists today are indebted to those cultures that had oral and epic story telling traditions, my art builds on previous histories of imparting information in its most rudimentary forms.

Despite the sometimes painful nature of the events depicted, I try to employ clever narratives and playful graphics to tap into the rich tradition of storytelling. My work becomes a personal exploration and expression of resilience, utilizing the visual language of folk art to convey the complexities of my experiences. The finished product is rendered in soft pastel and pastel-colored pencil on cotton-backed aluminum oxide industrial-grade sanded paper, offering a tactile and visually striking representation of the stories I love to share. In this process, I engage with the broader tradition of Mexican retablos, exvotos and storytelling while creating a distinct and personal narrative through the medium of contemporary visual art which I believe is uniquely my own.
